The Mustang Recovery Challenge is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit program designed to assist individuals in recovery from addiction by teaching them valuable life skills and a new trade—training wild Mustangs and other untrained horses. Through direct supervision by experienced coaches and guest trainers, participants in the program not only learn horsemanship but also gain a sense of responsibility, discipline, and work ethic. This educational opportunity provides participants with a unique skill set that can be applied in various sectors of the horse industry, creating a skilled workforce and promoting long-term recovery.
This project will benefit the Idaho horse industry in several ways:
The Mustang Recovery Challenge provides an educational experience that introduces participants to horse training, care, and handling. It includes both classroom instruction and hands-on experience, allowing participants to develop a deep understanding of horse training techniques, equine health, and behavior. This program also aligns with workforce development by preparing participants for careers in the equine industry, such as training, ranch work, or veterinary assistance.
Additionally, a new youth program will allow high school students to participate in horse training as part of their senior projects. This initiative aims to introduce the younger generation to the horse industry and instill a sense of responsibility, leadership, and work ethic, ensuring a sustainable future workforce for the industry.
The program will incorporate research into equine behavior, horse training methods, and the therapeutic benefits of working with wild and untrained horses. As part of the program, participants undergo regular assessments and reports with a psychologist to track their emotional and psychological progress throughout their recovery. This data provides valuable insight into the positive impact of equine-assisted therapy on addiction recovery, as well as the personal development of each participant. The research could serve as a case study for improving horse training methods and understanding the broader benefits of equine-assisted interventions.
In addition to supporting individuals in recovery, the Mustang Recovery Challenge is excited to introduce a new division specifically for veterans. This division will focus on involving veterans in the horse training process, where they will assist in training wild and untrained horses and participate in mountain trail rides. This initiative offers veterans a unique opportunity to bond with the horses while experiencing the therapeutic benefits of nature and physical activity, fostering healing, camaraderie, and skill-building in the process.
The Mustang Recovery Challenge highlights the importance of preserving and training wild and untrained horses, which directly ties into the promotion of Idaho’s equine culture. By showcasing these horses and the success stories of participants at local events such as The Teton Horse Experience (an educational expo focusing on the horse and livestock industry) and local rodeos, the program helps raise awareness about the role of horses in addiction recovery, workforce development, and veteran support in Idaho.
In summary, the Mustang Recovery Challenge will help advance the Idaho horse industry by educating individuals about horsemanship, preparing them for careers in the field, and promoting the training of wild and untrained horses. Additionally, by incorporating youth education, research on therapeutic benefits, veteran engagement, and tracking progress through psychological assessments, this program will have a lasting impact on both the equine community and Idaho’s future workforce.
