The Mustang Recovery Challenge is an empowering program designed to assist individuals in recovery from substance use and mental health challenges through the transformative bond with wild horses. Participants will have the unique opportunity to:
- Develop valuable life skills and responsibility.
- Build healthy relationships in a supportive, growth-oriented environment.
- Learn the trade of horse training under the guidance of expert trainers and mental health professionals.
The program sustains itself through the training and sale of wild horses, with proceeds reinvested into future initiatives. Our vision includes expanding to youth and veterans through equine-assisted interventions.
Eligibility:
- Must be an adult (18+).
- Clean and sober for at least one year.
- Completed a drug/alcohol program or received treatment/counseling for a substance use disorder within the last two years.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a car.
- Able to commit 20 hours per week to the program.
- Travel to the horse facility 10 miles north of Idaho Falls 4 times per week.
- Willing to complete an assessment, participate in interview questions, and follow up.
- Consent to having Facebook posts shared about their journey with their horse.
- Work on a team with another participant to train a wild horse.
Program Dates: March 1 - August 31, 2025
